Halloween in the Bilingual Classroom: Much More Than Costumes
31 OCTOBER 26
For many, Halloween might seem like just an excuse for candy and costumes, but in our bilingual section, it serves a much more powerful purpose. It is the perfect bridge between linguistic learning and cultural immersion. By stepping away from the workbook and experiencing traditions first hand, our students stop "studying" English and start "living" it.
This year, the star of our celebration is the school photocall. While it may look like a simple backdrop for photos, for us, it is a "Stage for Speaking." A photocall transforms our corridor into an interactive learning space. They have to use their vocabulary to describe their characters, make up spooky stories, interact with their peers in English to arrange the perfect shot, and, most importantly, gain the confidence when speaking in public..
This activity helps reduce "performance anxiety"—the fear of speaking a foreign language. By hiding behind a mask or a prop, students often feel more relaxed and willing to take risks with their language production. The photocall turns the concept of "Halloween" into a social memory that motivates them to keep using English.
Ultimately, these celebrations are about creating a sense of community. When students see their school participating in these traditions, they understand that English is not just a subject to pass, but a key to exploring a wider, diverse world.
